Pre-surgery briefing

Amelia had had her first open heart surgery scheduled on 23.05.2006 when she was about 6-months old. Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) for Children arranged Amelia to have her pre-admission investigation on 05.05.2006 at the hospital to ensure that she is well for the surgery.

As part of the normal pre-surgery procedures, the check up includes taking blood sample, ECO scan, ECG and collecting information on saturation, blood pressure, height and weight of Amelia.

First Visit to Intensive Care Unit

On the Same day, the nurse in-charge of Amelia suggested daddy and mummy to have a brief visit to the Intensive Care Ward and also the Ladybird Ward. The latter is a normal recovery ward. This is to give an idea to the parents of what are going to happen after surgery and what they can expect.

Hospital Rules

The cardiac liaison nurse explained the hospital accommodation arrangement for daddy and mummy throughout the period Amelia in the Intensive Care Ward and thereafter.

Parents’ access to the Intensive Care Ward is 24 hours a day and Visitors are allowed but limited to one at a time either with daddy or mummy.
